the library of wonder
MAR - JUN 2019
I hope that there is a new kind of library that is as comfortable as a garden and pays more attention to people’s feelings. If architecture and book were the keys in most of the library design, then in the ideal library, the people should be the real protagonists.
A new kind of library shall be created to emphasise personal emotions and experience, blurs the boundary between story and reality, preferably than using rigid layout to constrain people’s reading habit. To read in the library is to simultaneously sense the physical surroundings with the body, observe the beautiful view with the eyes and get carried away in a story unbounded by time and space.
The library of wonder is freed from the limitations of traditional layout and increased the flexibility of space, and the building can breathe freely and meet the space requirements of reading and activities. Breaking the wall and the floor is not only to achieve the continuity of horizontal and vertical space. More importantly, the relationship is stimulating and innovate the interaction of each space through the ‘bridge - circulation space is also providing tables and seating areas for individuals or small groups’ and ‘island - a pocket space, providing more quiet study space’.
It is deriving from the principles of constructing a Chinese garden, the techniques like “simultaneous view”, “in-depth view”, “fragmented view”, “forced view”, “divided movement” and “zig-zag movement”. These constructing rules are inspiring me to conceive an ideal spatial quality. At the same time, it can accommodate people to enjoy the pleasure of reading while enjoying the fun of the space. The library of the future will transcend its environment and present experiences as perception, and perceptions as stories, and stories as experiences.
